Our clients come to us for many reasons. Hunger and poverty data indicate that there are measurable causes for the more than 9,000 people served monthly by our organization.

  • In 2008, 51 percent of Brooklynites experienced difficulty in affording food. This number is up from 24 percent over rates seen in 2003 (more than double) and up from 39 percent in 2007 (a 31 percent increase).
  • In 2008, 21 percent of Brooklyn residents were unable to afford food immediately after losing their income. Source: NYC Hunger Experience 2008 Update

  • Today, the poverty rate in Bedford-Stuyvesant remains near 30%, which is higher than the rest of Brooklyn (19%), New York State (11%) and the country (10%). Source: Social Explorer

  • In 2008, BSCAH served 10,000 additional children over the number served in 2007.
  • 98% of children served by BSCAH receive free and reduced lunch.
  • The average salary of seniors living in BSCAH’s immediate community is less than $25,000.
  • 23% of our total client population suffers from high blood pressure and/or diabetes. This is a direct correlation to the unhealthy diets often associated with poverty and the lack of consistent access to fresh fruits and vegetables.
